FAST DRIVING COURSE
Course duration: 2 days
It is a course which keeps the safe driving courses’ characteristics adding a streak of
sportiness.
The learner drivers, besides acquiring the basics of the sporty driving, become aware of their own limits and the physics’, learn to control themselves and the vehicle in extreme situations, get awareness and “sense of the speed”.
The course takes place inside the equipped proving ground on handling circuits and on the 2000m. ISAM Motor Centre speed Circuit.
During the fast driving course the following themes and exercises are dealt with:
First day:
1. Skid car: with the help of a special device reducing the wheels’ grip are simulated the car’s reactions in low grip conditions. Ready to slew round?
2. Oversteer and understeer in a bend: different drives imply opposite behaviours of the vehicle. By doing these exercises one learns to steer out of a skid, gets more feeling of the car and develops a right technique of countersteer. Exercises are carried out on appositely equipped areas both on dry and wet tar; controlling the vehicle in such conditions is not easy at all, you’ll see!
3. Skill in the reverse: only with the help of the side and rear-view mirrors, in bottlenecks that recreate the narrow ways of the built-up areas with unexpected obstacles. Nothing to do with easy parking manoeuvres.
4. Pendulum: one learns to go around a quick bend and a sharp counter bend in a controlled skid. The learner driver will be able to manage the load shifts improving their driving feeling.
5. Braking techniques and methodologies: emergency braking avoiding the obstacle on dry ground; emergency braking avoiding the obstacle on wet ground;
differentiated braking on low grip grounds (ice sheet effect).
Obviously all this is performed with and without ABS braking system.
Second day:
1. Braking in a bend: braking in a bend, especially at a high speed, implies considerable driving skills; after practising the learner driver will be able to do it in total safety driving more than 120 km/h.
2. Overtaking: a series of overtaking exercises at increasing speed are carried out.
The learner driver develops feeling of the steering and control of trajectory.
Erring is human, though it is better learning to do it safely.
3. Fast slalom.
4. Battery of laps: first as a passenger beside one of the instructors then at the wheel. All the knowledge and the techniques acquired through the exercises on the large squares and handling circuits will be very useful on the track.
The learner drivers will improve their approach to trajectories so as to go around a bend effectively and safely; they will also perfect the downshift (double declutch and heel/ tip) and get familiar with always closer to bend decelerations.
